Types of Eye Tests and Examinations for Eye Health & Vision

With the exception of sleeping, we use our eyesight for pretty much every activity we do, and this is why it is said that our eyes are the windows of our body. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that we take care of our eye health, irrespective of whether our eyesight is healthy or poor. There are several places that provide fantastic eye care in Sri Lanka, so you should make regular appointments for eye testing in Sri Lanka.

When you visit one of the opticians in Sri Lanka or an eye specialist for your regular eye testing in Sri Lanka, the following are some of the basic tests you can expect to undergo.

Refraction Testing

A refractive error is basically when your eye does not bend light appropriately, which in turn produces blurry images. Refractive errors include nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), loss of near vision with age (presbyopia), and astigmatism.

Refraction errors can easily be detected during regular eye testing in Sri Lanka and there are many ways to deal with these errors, especially with all the available options of eye care in Sri Lanka. Therefore, a refraction test is usually always conducted and is mandatory to obtain a prescription for spectacles and contact lenses or any other optical aid. Further, an annual refraction test is highly recommended for individuals of any age.

Eye Pressure (IOP)

The fluid pressure inside our eyes is known as Intraocular Pressure (IOP). These fluids assist in keeping the eyes nourished and maintain its shape. Whilst there is a natural system of drainage within the eye, sometimes this fails, leading to fluid build-up in the eye which causes high intraocular pressure (Ocular Hypertension), ultimately causing Glaucoma and/or blindness. IOP is very important to determine a patients’ risk of getting Glaucoma.

Usually, there are two ways in which eye pressure is measured. One is known as Air Puff Tonometry (non-contact) and the other is Pascal Tonometer (contact). This is included in a regular eye check-up routine, so visit one of the many opticians in Sri Lanka of your choice.

Visual Fields

Visual Field tests allow opticians in Sri Lanka to see your world from your view. It essentially measures the circumference of your vision range, when your eyes are focused on one single point. Visual Field tests are always part of a comprehensive eye exam, as it helps to understand the beginning and end of your peripheral vision as well as how clearly you notice objects in your peripheral vision.

Color Vision

Colors are perceived according to our individual cells in the neural layer of the eye. Color vision tests help determine to which extent of the color spectrum a person can see. Whilst most defects are congenital, it is important to detect them early on to prepare accordingly. Color vision tests are a very simple screening test and are of two types namely Ishihara’s Test for Colour Vision and D-15 Color Vision Test.

Biometry

Biometry is the process of measuring the power of the cornea (keratometry) and the length of the eye and using this data to determine the ideal intraocular lens power”. Simply put, a biometry test or scan is the test that allows eye care specialists or surgeons to determine the power of replacing the natural lens in our eyes for artificial ones.  According to this test, the eye surgeon will determine the type of lens you need.

Orthoptic Assessment

The purpose of an orthoptic assessment is to determine a person’s ability to use both eyes like a pair (overall binocularity). This test assesses the alignment and in-sync-ness of our eyes. Essentially, when we focus on something or our eyes follow something, our brain fuses the sight from each together to form one 3D image. However, any defects could hinder this system, blurring our vision and bringing on other symptoms such as double vision. Therefore, this is a mandatory test done in any establishment practicing eye care in Sri Lanka.

Remember, eye conditions don’t occur overnight. Whilst you won’t be able to identify any signs of diseases yourself, it is important to get your eyes checked on a regular basis. The health of your eyes is entirely in your hands!
